C is for the countless folks infected
My whole world lies waiting
O for overwhelming miles to go
V for vaccine so we’re all protected
I for idiots who still say, “No”
D for deaths–the numbers just exploded
As virus raged for all the world to see
Put them all together, they spell COVID
What lies ahead behind Year Number Three?
Khati Hendry
Characterizations:
funny, moving, right on!, well written
Great, unsettling Flash, Khati. Says it all, succinctly.
Gee, I thought I was being lighthearted—compared to another screed I was working on. I guess COVID just doesn’t lend itself to levity, as it turns out.
Perfectly rendered, Khati. Humorous but dark, just like the times we live in.
And short! Gallows humor has its place.
Bravo Khati,, gallows humor indeed!
Thanks. We can laugh grimly together.
Brilliant RetfoFlash, Khati. As is the whole “Door Number 3” concept. And perfectly illustrated as well.
Negative and cynical to be sure, but absolutely appropriately so. It’s not as though this was three years of Mardi Gras we’ve just endured. And keep enduring.
You always get my references, and I appreciate that. I find that things I assume people would be familiar with are gradually disappearing and I’m not catching the wave of new references. Waah! In the meantime, thanks for the kind words.
Spot on, Khati. Love the poetic format. You capture where we are so well.
Thanks—it came to me while walking the dog through the park, mind wandering as it will.
I love it. Mordant cynics of the world, unite!
Thanks Dave, I’m with you.
Great flash, Khati, I was singing the song as I read it. I am always a sucker for topical lyrics to old tunes, and you are very good at composing them. And yes, like John, I got the Year Number 3/Door Number 3 reference. In fact, the first time through, I read it as “What lies ahead behind Door Number Three?”
The picture of the doors may have had an influence—and of course you would also know the tune! That is what I love about Retrospect. COVID walks in the park have spurred my composing efforts.
