School summer vacation compositions......ugh

My last summer vacation

Formulaic, dull

Pen pals from  afar,

Korea, Belgium, Chile,

Made writing so fun

Lost contact with Beatrix,

Yhung Mi, Juan & Helena,

Wonder where they are

Their letters, postcards

Opened my world to delight

Of distant places

  1. Thanx for this wonderful haiku Sara.
In these few lines you’ve captured how the letters and postcards from your childhood penpals instilled in you delight in distant places.

May we all travel safely once again!

  2. Dave Ventre says:

Very evocative. I love the way that such a short structure makes one carefully choose each word.

Coincidentally, one of my favorite writers is Basho, a poet who lived in Japan in the last half of the 17th century.

  3. Betsy Pfau says:

You’ve distilled the pleasure of pen pals in the spareness of your words.
