May 1st was Garth’s and my 10-year anniversary. It’s a milestone for any couple, but for me, it was extra special. It marked the very first time I’d been with a partner for ten years (and counting).
We’ve always gone somewhere special on our anniversary, sometimes overseas, but this year…well, Covid. Instead, we enjoyed a quiet dinner at our favorite local restaurant…best martinis around.
We exchanged gifts. For him, I’d commissioned watercolor portraits of our newest addition, Teddy, and dear sweet Charlie. Garth, well, he gave me a little bling.
I definitely saved the best for last.

Barbara Buckles
Artist, writer, storyteller, spy. Okay, not a spy…I was just going for the rhythm.
I call myself “an inveterate dabbler.” (And my husband calls me “an invertebrate babbler.”) I just love to create one way or another. My latest passion is telling true stories live, on stage. Because it scares the hell out of me.
As a memoirist, I focus on the undercurrents. Drawing from memory, diaries, notes, letters and photographs, I never ever lie, but I do claim creative license when fleshing out actual events in order to enhance the literary quality, i.e., what I might have been wearing, what might have been on the table, what season it might have been. By virtue of its genre, memoir also adds a patina of introspection and insight that most probably did not exist in real time.

Happiest of anniversaries to two keepers!
And the bling aint bad either!
Thanks, Dee!
Lovely story, Barb — especially since you could have written just about the same one for me, as you can probably tell from my story. Kathie and I are now grizzled old marrieds of 16+ years, but it is the same happy theme as your perfect title and last line: saving the best for last. Though now I better get on a bling hunt for 17!
Thanks, John! Not sure if you need bling for 17 but definitely for 20, which will be here before you know it. Might as well start looking now. 🙂
Yes John, as unmaterialistic as us liberal, modern-thinking gal types we think we are, we do like a little bling now and then!
Wonderful RetroFlash, Barb. I look forward to seeing your new bling in person!!
Thanks, Suzy!
