I realized late in life that “writer” is likely

Wow, Dave…this sounds like a “road not taken” sort of thought. You write well, so at least you have Retrospect as an outlet and your friends here to read and comfort you. I hope that offers you some sustenance.
Sometimes the roads not taken seem as tangled as a Los Angeles cloverleaf highway exchange. And I have found Retrospect quite sustaining!
