In the early days of the pandemic, when the world went into shut down mode, we happened upon Offspring, an Australian series that first aired in August, 2010 and ran for seven seasons. Yes, it was a bit soapy and what you might call a dramady, but we fell in love with the characters and were hooked. The story centered on Nina Proudman, an obstetrician, her wacky family, and her love life over seven years. Nina’s character often “breaks the fourth wall,” commenting on the plot or sharing her internal fantasies with the viewer. These observations often made us laugh, just what we needed during those frightening and bleak early days of the pandemic.

Because Offspring had it all: love, sex, babies, good food, and lots of music, it held our attention and took our minds off our isolation and anxiety.

Because Offspring had it all: love, sex, babies, good food, and lots of music, it held our attention and took our minds off our isolation and anxiety. Back in 2020, we recommended this show to a good friend of ours who was recently widowed. She became addicted to Offspring, which helped her stave off some of the loneliness and depression she was experiencing. Once she finished the seven seasons, she re-watched them. The characters and zany plot lines carried her through a very tough time in her life.

You can still find Offspring on Hulu.

  1. I remain a big Doctor Blake fan

Thanks for the recommendation. I never heard of Offspring and don’t get Hulu but maybe it will appear some day and be just the antidote for grim reality. Sounds like a great guilty pleasure.

  3. Suzy says:

Never heard of this show, Laurie, but I will certainly look for it now, since we are always looking for shows to watch that everyone can agree on. Currently it is Abbott Elementary we are watching, but we will run out of episodes soon, so I hope Offspring will be next.

  4. Thanx Laurie, I haven’t heard of Offspring, will try to find it,
It sounds like it gave you some well-needed distraction during that awful lockdown time. How we all got thru it is a puzzlement!

  5. Jim Willis says:

Thanks for that tip and insight on Offspring, Laurie! I’ve got Hulu, and I’ll give it a try. One series that I binged on during Covid (and still today) is Shetland, on PBS. The writing and performances in British dramas and comedies are so good, and the actors seem like everyday people.
